The clinical history correlates poorly with presence or absence of obstructive sleep apnoea on polysomnography. As such, it is difficult to know where one lies on the spectrum of sleep disordered breathing without a sleep study. Discussion of treatment options will vary depending on whether or not the patient has sleep apnoea, and the severity of sleep apnoea, if present. To facilitate this discussion, it would be very helpful if patients referred for assessment of snoring or possible sleep apnoea come armed with sleep study results.
In general, laboratory sleep studies are more sensitive than home based sleep studies for the milder end of the spectrum of sleep disordered breathing. Nevertheless, some home study equipment has been validated against laboratory studies, and is often sufficient to make the diagnosis and determine if treatment is necessary.
